Welcome to Piikani Nation Secondary School, proudly located in Brocket on the Piikani Nation. At PNSS, we are committed to providing high-quality learning experiences through the Alberta Curriculum while ensuring that Blackfoot language, culture, and ways of knowing are meaningfully woven into all aspects of education. We believe that strengthening cultural identity and language revitalization are essential to student success, pride, and lifelong learning. Through authentic learning opportunities, community partnerships, and the guidance of Elders and Knowledge Keepers, students deepen their understanding of Blackfoot traditions and values. Our dedicated staff work to create a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment where every student is encouraged to achieve their personal best. Together, we are preparing our students to thrive in the future while remaining connected to the rich heritage of the Piikani Nation.

Blackfoot Culture and Language

Blackfoot Language 10, 20, and 30 are required courses for graduation at PNSS because they play an important role in preserving and strengthening Blackfoot language and culture. These courses help students develop language skills while deepening their understanding of Blackfoot history, traditions, values, and identity. Learning the language supports cultural sustainability by ensuring that knowledge is passed on to future generations. By requiring these courses, PNSS demonstrates its commitment to cultural revitalization and the continued vitality of the Piikani Nation.

Reziliency Weeks and Blackfoot Language & Culture

Piikani Nation Secondary School is committed to providing students with meaningful learning experiences that connect academic learning, personal growth, culture, and community. Through our innovative Reziliency Weeks and ongoing Blackfoot language and cultural programming, students engage in hands-on learning that supports both educational success and cultural identity.

Four times throughout the school year, students participate in Reziliency Weeks—immersive learning experiences that focus on practical skills, exploration, and experiential education. Each Reziliency Week is built around a specific theme: Health, Fine Arts, STEM, and Outdoor Education. During these weeks, students step beyond the traditional classroom setting to participate in activities that encourage creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, wellness, and real-world learning.

As a school located on the Piikani Nation, we place great importance on ensuring that Blackfoot language, culture, and traditional ways of knowing are woven throughout the educational experience. Students participate in a variety of Blackfoot language and cultural activities throughout the year, providing opportunities to learn from Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members.

Land-based learning is an essential component of our programming. Through experiences on the land, students develop a deeper understanding of Blackfoot traditions, history, values, and their connection to the natural world. These opportunities help strengthen cultural identity while fostering respect, responsibility, and a sense of belonging within the Piikani community.

By combining experiential learning with cultural teachings, PNSS creates educational experiences that are meaningful, engaging, and reflective of the strengths and traditions of the Piikani Nation. Our goal is to ensure that every student graduates with both the academic skills and cultural knowledge needed to thrive in the future while remaining connected to their heritage.

Extracurricular Activities

At Piikani Nation Secondary School, we believe that some of the most meaningful learning experiences take place outside the classroom. Our extracurricular programs provide students with opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, confidence, and school pride while building lifelong friendships and healthy habits. We encourage all students to become involved and discover activities that match their interests and strengths.

PNSS offers a variety of athletic opportunities throughout the school year, including volleyball, basketball, cross country, badminton, track and field, golf, and archery. These programs allow students to represent their school, compete with pride, and develop important life skills such as perseverance, discipline, and sportsmanship. Students who are interested in personal fitness can also participate in our Workout Club, where they can set individual goals and focus on health and wellness in a supportive environment.

Beyond sports, students can challenge themselves intellectually through our Chess Club, which promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, and strategic decision-making. Academic success is also supported through tutoring opportunities and academic camps that help students strengthen their skills, build confidence, and reach their educational goals.

School spirit is an important part of life at PNSS. Through our House System, students are organized into one of three houses: Aohkiiyi, Ksaahkomm, or Naato’si. Throughout the year, houses compete in a variety of activities, challenges, and events that emphasize participation, teamwork, leadership, and community. The House System creates a strong sense of belonging while encouraging students to support one another and celebrate both individual and collective achievements.

At PNSS, extracurricular activities are an important part of creating a vibrant and engaging school experience. Whether students are competing on the court, solving problems at the chess board, improving their fitness, or representing their house, they are developing skills and memories that will last a lifetime.
